The Lasting Importance of Libraries
At a time when many libraries are closing down due to lack of funding, a lot of people who love to read can’t afford to regularly buy new books like the emperor of nihon-ja. When a local library closes down, dozens, if not hundreds, of children can no longer bring home stacks of stories to read over the weekend, or during the summer. Children who read regularly are often better spellers, and understand grammar better. They tend to do better in school. The lasting importance of libraries lies in the fact that with the growing expense of book publishing, and the dwindling number of libraries, some day maybe won’t be able to afford to read. And what a sad loss that would be.
